Commonplaces of the new Barbarians
Baldini & Castoldi, Milan
Airport-art buyers, Banana republicans, Cash-cows (charter passengers),
Eden-seekers, Freakwent travellers, Go-natives!, Hilton-folks, H.T.I.
(Hyper tanned idiots), Safarians & Big fivers, Slides pushers,
Snowbirds, Touristophobes, Tropical-chics, Wreck tourists, Yacht people
and the whole mass of dwellers of playas del anywhere , where
show-indios perform. Just for them. Turistario is a small
anthropological dictionary collecting the jargon of the globetrotters'
tribe (Homo turisticus). And it is also a handbook of touristwatching.
But who are these vandals that slash their signatures on baobab and
Michelangelo? Who are these Ulysses that "have done" Italy, Kenya and
Thailand, as if they were cultural heroes that really made these
countries? Who are these photomaniacs? Tourists!, i.e. the new
barbarians. I.e. us, with no exceptions. We that pretend to believe in
"exclusive paradises". We that on holidays hurry up and buy things,
exactly as we do when we are home, and once back are eager to overwhelm
neighbours with our Odyssey.
